Trump blames diversity hires in aviation

Donald Trump claimed that diversity hires have made America’s aviation industry unsafe after a military helicopter collided with a plane near Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport.

The US president told a White House press conference that the military helicopter did “the opposite of what it was told” before crashing into an American Airlines flight with 64 people on board.

Mr Trump said he would “restore faith in American air travel” after alleging that those suffering from “severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities” had been hired as air traffic controllers.

The US President, who has recently signed executive orders dismantling diversity initiatives in the federal government, blamed his predecessor Joe Biden for lowering standards and endangering lives.

“My administration will set the highest possible bar for aviation safety,” Mr Trump told reporters, saying you needed a “very special genius” to coordinate air traffic.

Instead, quoting news reports, he said the federal aviation administration was “actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions”.

Mr Trump said “warnings were given very late”, appearing to impart some of the blame to the air traffic control team.

He added that the crew on the helicopter “should have seen where they were going”.
